Not your Monolith, I AM , Issue 1

The two pieces are representations of the following articles.
“I am… Chronically Brown” by Sukhjeen Kaur and Shani Dhanda

This issue explores the concept of who we are as individuals and as a community of artists and writers from across the globe. I am not your monolith. I am disabled. I am more than my impairment or condition.

A surreal collage of a photo of a
South Asian woman’s face floating against a pink background surrounded by cut outs of
open coconuts. Her skin is brown and she is looking to the side wearing pink lipstick. There is a line drawing of a hearing aid to the left of her face, a blue eraser placed on her chin that appears to be rubbing away her skin to reveal a light pink colour underneath. A graphic hooped gold ring is pierced through her nose and a purple cut out hand is holding a plastic pair of chattering teeth in front of her mouth. A paint brush is sat on the top of her head, painting her skin to look more pale.
A surreal collage of a photo of
a South Asian woman’s face floating on a bright yellow background surrounded by cut outs of clenched red fists. Her skin is brown, she is wearing dark winged eyeliner and pink lipstick. There is a line drawing of a hearing aid to the side of her face with a purple cut out hand beside it. A graphic nose ring with a cross hanging from it sits on her nose and there are drops of sky blue tears falling from her left eye in the shape of India and surrounding countries.
